BETEC Board Elects New Chair and Board Members

Chris MathisAt its December 5 meeting, held during the Buildings XII Conference in Clearwater, Florida, the Building Enclosure Technology and Environment Council (BETEC) Board of Direction elected Chris Mathis as it new chair. Before the Board meeting, the full Council elected and re-elected a slate of 11 Board members for new three-year terms.

Newly elected Chair Chris Mathis stated his vision for BETEC to members of the Board and the Building Enclosure Council (BEC) chairs by first emphasizing support for the local BECs. BETEC’s greatest challenge in the coming year will be to obtain funding for BETEC activities from the public and private sectors. Chris concluded by stating that any activity of BETEC is accomplished by people who do the work, not necessarily by committees.

R. Christopher “Chris” Mathis is a building scientist and businessman who has spent over 30 years focusing on how buildings and building products perform – from energy efficiency to code compliance to long-term durability and sustainability. He is a founding member of the National Fenestration Rating Council and served for four years as its first director, helping to develop the nation’s first energy performance rating and labeling system for fenestration products.

Mathis served 4 terms on the International Code Council’s (ICC) International Energy Conservation Code Development Committee, helping to write the nation’s model energy code; recently completed 2 years on the ICC’s Sustainable Building Technology Committee; and served on the ICC’s Code Development Committee for the International Green Construction Code.

He is a 30-year member of ASHRAE and has recently been recognized as an ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer. He helped write the nation’s model energy code for commercial buildings while serving on the ASHRAE 90.1 Committee. Also a 30-year member of ASTM, he currently serves as chairman of the Window Installation Subcommittee of E06.51 and the Built Environment Advisory Committee..

Earlier this fall, the BETEC Nominations Committee, which consists of Board members Robert Magoon (Chair), Laverne Dalgleish and Theresa Weston, developed a slate of candidates to stand for election. According to the BETEC bylaws, each year one third of the membership of the BETEC Board is required to run. Election results, which were announced at the December 5 Board meeting, included:

Paul Bertram, Construction Specifications Institute
Justin Boone, WJE
Andre Desjarlais, Oak Ridge National Laboratory
Richard Keleher, Richard Keleher, Architect
Chris Mathis, MC Squared, BETEC Chair
